What is MTD?

HMRC's biggest tax shake-up in a generation.

Making Tax Digital (MTD) is HMRC's programme to digitise the UK tax system. Instead of a single annual Self Assessment, sole traders and landlords above the income threshold must keep digital records and send four quarterly updates plus a final declaration using HMRC-recognised software.

It applies first to those with qualifying income over £50,000 from April 2026, then £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. Paper records and spreadsheet-only filings won't be enough.

  • Keep digital records of all business income and expenses
  • Submit 4 quarterly updates to HMRC each tax year
  • File an end-of-period statement for each business
  • Submit a final declaration replacing Self Assessment
  • Use HMRC-recognised MTD-compatible software

MTD Overview

The key requirements — and how we handle them.

HMRC's six core requirements for Making Tax Digital for Income Tax, alongside exactly what Taskplete does for you.

What HMRC requires

  1. 1

    Keep digital records

All business income and expenses stored in HMRC-recognised software — no more shoeboxes or standalone spreadsheets.

  2. 2

    Submit 4 quarterly updates

Send a summary of income and expenses to HMRC every three months for each self-employment and property business.

  3. 3

    File an end-of-period statement

Finalise each business's figures after the tax year — adjustments, accruals, allowances and reliefs applied.

  4. 4

    Submit a final declaration

Replaces the annual Self Assessment return. Confirms total income, tax due and any other untaxed income.

  5. 5

    Use MTD-compatible software

Only HMRC-recognised tools can file. Spreadsheets need bridging software with digital links to qualify.

  6. 6

    Meet the deadlines

Quarterly updates are due one month after each quarter end; the final declaration by 31 January following the tax year.
